Summer on The Summit

Most people know Sugar Bowl for winter storms and powder days. But summer on Donner Summit offers a different kind of mountain experience.
Long mornings at 7,000 feet. Wildflowers across the Sierra. Quiet stays in the mountains. Summer camp adventures, mountain weddings, and gatherings that bring people together in a place that feels far from the everyday.
Whether you are planning a family getaway, a private event, or simply looking for time in the mountains, summer at Sugar Bowl and Royal Gorge offers a slower side of the Sierra to explore.

Camp Days in the Sierra
Sugar Bowl Summer Camp gives kids the chance to spend their days outside exploring the mountains through hiking, climbing, rafting, lake activities, and adventure with new friends. Designed to build confidence, curiosity, and connection to the outdoors, camp has become a summer tradition for many local families.
Please check availability, some of the most popular weeks of camp are already sold out.

Quiet Stays in the Mountains
Summer on Donner Summit has a rhythm all its own: Cool mornings. Afternoon hikes. Evenings beneath the stars.
Vacation rentals at Sugar Bowl place guests in the middle of some of the Sierra’s most beautiful terrain, with easy access to hiking, biking, climbing, and nearby alpine lakes. Whether you are planning a weekend escape or a longer stay, the mountains offer space to slow down and reconnect.

On the Trails
Summer at Sugar Bowl means stepping directly into some of the Sierra’s most adventurous terrain.
Surrounded by Forest Service land and perched high above Donner Lake, Sugar Bowl sits at the crossroads of hiking, trail running, climbing, and mountain exploration on Donner Summit. The Pacific Crest Trail passes directly through the area, connecting visitors to miles of rugged alpine terrain and panoramic Sierra Crest views.
Each summer, Sugar Bowl becomes a waypoint for Pacific Crest Trail hikers making their long journey from Mexico to Canada. July marks the peak season for thru-hikers passing through Donner Summit, alongside day hikers exploring routes like the Mount Judah Loop or venturing out toward the Sierra Club’s historic Benson Hut.
The mountains also come alive with trail running season. On July 25, trail runners will take on the Mountain Tiger Trail Race, a demanding 12.5-mile point-to-point course that climbs across all four peaks of Sugar Bowl with more than 3,000 feet of elevation gain. The course traverses rugged alpine terrain, sections of the Pacific Crest Trail, and some of the most scenic ridgelines on Donner Summit.

The Perfect Tahoe Wedding
From laid-back meadow celebrations at Royal Gorge to intimate lakeside ceremonies at Lake Mary, and all the way to the top of the mountain, Sugar Bowl offers unforgettable Tahoe wedding venues.
Couples can exchange vows beside a high alpine lake, host cocktail hours at the summit accessed by chairlift, then celebrate late into the evening inside our beautifully renovated historic lodge. Wide open mountain landscapes, ideal summer weather, and a setting that feels both elevated and authentic create an experience that is distinctly Tahoe.
One of the things couples love most about weddings at Sugar Bowl is the feeling of privacy. Events feel tucked away at your own private mountain, surrounded by nature and reserved just for your guests, with the flexibility to celebrate without the restrictions of a traditional venue curfew.

Team Retreats That Don’t Feel Like Work
Fresh mountain air has a way of changing the energy of a meeting.
Sugar Bowl and Royal Gorge offer flexible indoor and outdoor spaces for retreats, team gatherings, celebrations, and private events, all surrounded by the Sierra Crest.
Instead of fluorescent conference rooms and crowded cities, groups can spend time outside, explore the mountains, and create experiences people actually look forward to attending.

Building What’s Next
While summer unfolds across the mountain, construction crews are already hard at work preparing for the future of Sugar Bowl.
This summer marks the second year of the largest renovation project in Sugar Bowl’s nearly 100-year history. Major projects include the replacement of the Village Gondola and improvements to the Main Lodge. This winter, come explore the Main Lodge’s new Rental Shop, Retail Shop, Guest Service Office, and a new Learning Area and Snow Beach perfect for beginner skiers and riders.
These projects represent an important investment in the future of the resort while preserving the timeless character and independent spirit that have defined Sugar Bowl since 1939.
Look out for progress updates on our website and social media channels along the way.
