The Sugar Bowl homeowner community is driving the most transformative capital improvement plan in our resort’s 86-year history. Our goal is to elevate the guest experience and ensure that one of California’s oldest ski resorts keeps the spirit alive for future generations of residents, visitors and employees.
We’ve broken ground — and we’ll work hard all summer to deliver uninterrupted service for the 2025-’26 ski season. We’ll preserve the secluded charm that differentiates Sugar Bowl and its unique snowbound village — while modernizing our resort for visitors from San Francisco and beyond.
One of California’s oldest ski resorts, Sugar Bowl was designed in the 1930s. Nearly 100 years later, design teams studied archival photography to recreate details such as plank flooring and shearling upholstery, mirroring the resort’s post-World War II aesthetic. We’ve even retained the legendary San Francisco-based architectural firms that designed the original structures to ensure continuity of the restrained, modern-yet-timeless aesthetic. No detail was overlooked.
Key development projects include:
Summer of 2025 Projects
Completion Target: Nov 2025
- New expanded deck with terrace seating and fire pits
- New kitchen with reimagined food and beverage offering
- Modern locker facility
- Resort "Beautification Phase 01"
- Village green & courtyard landscape
- Removal of unused buildings
Summer of 2026 and Beyond Projects
- Continued restoration / beautification and new Northern lodge entrance
Sugar Bowl Village Lodge is home to a Douglas fir and pine deck widely considered the best in the Sierra Nevada. Early visitors included Greta Garbo, Errol Flynn and Charlie Chaplin – and it’s still the perfect place for people watching, lunch, or après-ski rejuvenation.
Over the summer of 2025, we’ll double the square footage by transforming the space into two tiers. The alfresco area up top will feature outdoor seating and firepits, perfect for bluebird days and alpenglow dusk.

Below the Village Lodge Deck, we’re building a state-of-the-art locker facility for guests. This all-new space will include two- and four-person lockers with abundant storage space for gear and built-in boot dryers for comfort no matter the weather outdoors. Our locker area provides more than just ample storage and daily convenience: It’s a friendly hub of the Sugar Bowl community, where regulars gather at the start and end of great days in the great outdoors.

In 1953, Sugar Bowl became the first ski area on the West Coast to install a gondola. Starting in spring 2026, we will replace our historic, 4-person gondola with an 8-person Doppelmayr system carrying skiers and residents over North America’s only snowbound village — an architectural hamlet where time stands still.
We’ll also overhaul the parking deck and garage that houses the gondola. Instead of repaving and rebuilding the 300-space parking structure, we will renovate the existing structure with slope stabilization and structural reinforcements — a far more efficient solution than demolishing and constructing from scratch. We also plan to repurpose old materials with new, which will help reduce the project’s material and energy footprint.
Summer of 2026 Projects
Completion Target: Nov. 2026
- Gondola Replacement
- Gondola Terminals + Garage Rehabilitation
Our modern architectural vision remains deeply rooted in our Sierra Nevada history. Nearly 100 years after our founding as California’s first ski resort, our design teams studied archival photography to recreate details such as plank flooring and shearling upholstery, mirroring the resort’s post-World War II aesthetic. We’ve even retained the legendary San Francisco-based architectural firms that designed our original structures to ensure continuity of the restrained, modern-yet-timeless aesthetic.

The Village Lodge will be complete when skiers return for the start of the 2025-’26 season. Starting in spring of 2026, we will begin a revitalization project on the Main Lodge, formerly Judah Lodge, initially constructed in 1998.
The majority of visitors own season passes or buy day passes online, so we are enhancing the arrival flow for the 21st century — including a modern dropoff experience and ticketing, rentals, and ski school area. Shopping will be front and center, intentionally curated to inspire the Sugar Bowl vibe. We’ll update the finishes and furnishings throughout the Main Lodge food court, improving customer flow.
Even bigger changes will happen outside of the Main Lodge. Starting in the summer of 2026, we’ll launch a hardscape redesign at the bottom of the mountain — to build on Sugar Bowl’s rich heritage and deep passion for sport. A new “Ski Beach” will offer an inspiring and accessible learning environment designed to ignite a lifelong love of skiing. This thoughtfully designed base area will serve as a convenient hub for meeting instructors, friends, and family — and will seamlessly connect newcomers to more advanced terrain, including a dedicated athlete training zone for those aspiring to pursue the sport at a higher level.
Summer of 2025 Projects
- Unique Employee Lounge experience
- Relocation of Snowsports Center
Summer of 2026 and Beyond Projects
- Main Lodge Renovation
- Enhanced arrival experience and flow
- Roads and landscape improvements
- New Beginner Experience with modified terrain and lifts
- Snowmaking investments

Since 1939, Sugar Bowl has been at the forefront of snowsports, hosting elite events from the original Silver Belt Classic in the 1940s to the modern Silver Belt freeride competition. In 2024, we unveiled the start of Sugar Bowl Parks, a world-class athlete training area for freestyle skiers and snowboarders. Sugar Bowl Parks offers a seamless progression, from junior development to elite-level performance, providing the foundation for athletes to achieve their goals at national and international competitions.
Beginning summer 2025, we’re launching a series of major improvements across our athlete training zones to elevate performance, safety, and consistency throughout the season.
In Sugar Bowl Parks, the Golden Eagle pro-level triple jump line will be enhanced with permanent earthworks—reducing snow requirements and ensuring consistent, high-quality features all winter long. We’ll also continue development planning on Peregrine Ridge and The Condor, with a focus on improving terrain flow and maintaining safe access to Ridge Run.
In our speed venue, course enhancements through earth shaping will allow for wall-to-wall grooming with less snow, delivering greater reliability and a premier racing surface. Additionally, we’ll remove the old Lincoln base building to widen the Silver Belt runout—making way for a full-length, FIS-homologated Super-G course for athlete training and events.
To top it off, we’re expanding snowmaking on Vanderbilt, ensuring optimal race conditions and extending the competitive season. We’re proud to be training the next generation of Olympians—and we’re investing with that mission at heart.

Sustainability
Sugar Bowl's home is Donner Summit – the playground of John Muir and the birthplace of American environmentalism. We're enhancing infrastructure and improving the guest experience, without increasing Sugar Bowl's land footprint or energy intensity.
We’re incorporating “defensible space forest fuel reduction efforts” to mitigate wildfire risk. We’re upcycling historic elements from the old gondola terminal and reusing them as architectural features throughout the renovated structures. We’re overhauling the Judah base area in clever ways to improve snowmaking while conserving California’s precious fresh water. And Executive Chef Jason Landas is upleveling our expanded restaurant with even more sustainable, hyper seasonal, hyper local food – including ingredients from regional farmers and ranchers.
