The Story of

Royal Gorge

Exploring Donner Summit since 1971.

Winter, Wide Open.

Royal Gorge invites you to experience winter at a different pace. Wander quiet forests, glide across open meadows, and discover sweeping Sierra views along an expansive network of groomed cross-country ski trails.

Find an easy rhythm in the classic tracks, move across the snow on skate skis, or step into the landscape on snowshoes. Come for a peaceful morning, a full-day journey, or to discover what waits around the next bend.

Find Your Winter Rhythm
Every trail begins with a dose of curiosity. How you satisfy it is up to you.

Rooted in Donner Summit

Royal Gorge is shaped by its surroundings. Deep Sierra snow, winding forests, open meadows and generations of trail users have all helped create the experience found here today.

Connected to the Village at Sugar Bowl and the wider Donner Summit community, Royal Gorge offers a different way to experience the mountain—one built around movement, discovery, and time spent together outside.

A Landscape Worth Protecting

The Royal Gorge story is also a story of stewardship. In 2012, a partnership involving Sugar Bowl Resort and Truckee Donner Land Trust helped protect this remarkable Donner Summit landscape and carry the Royal Gorge experience into its next chapter.

Today, that legacy continues through the people who care for the trails, the community that returns each winter, and every guest who discovers a little more of Royal Gorge.
