Learn to Skate: This clinic will be for first time or novice skaters. Skating is a great crossover sport for downhill skiers looking for a new aerobic activity. The aim of the clinic is to get people comfortable on their skate skis. They will learn the basic V1 technique and the basics of going downhill under control on Nordic equipment.
Learn to Stride: This clinic is great for anyone that has never been on skis before. The aim of this clinic is to teach people to move around on their skis, the basics of the striding motion, and the basics of learning downhill control on stride skis.
Intermediate Skate: This clinic is for people who are already comfortable on their skate skis, but are looking to improve their technique. The clinic will teach optimized body position, evaluate skiers’ efficiency, offer suggestions for improvement and introduce techniques such as V2 and V2 alternate. The clinic will also include more advanced downhill technique. All people attending this clinic will need a Royal Gorge season pass or a valid day pass.
Advanced Skate: This clinic is for great skaters who are looking to refine their skate technique. Perfect for racers or avid skiers (those who ski more than once per week) who are looking to make their skiing smoother and more efficient. Personal movement analysis is the highlight of this clinic. All people attending this clinic will need a valid Royal Gorge season pass or a valid day pass.
Intermediate/Advanced Stride: This clinic is for anyone looking to improve their striding technique, whether for racing or just keeping up with friends! Topics of instruction can be tailored to the needs of the participants, but will likely include evaluation of and suggestions for optimizing basic striding motion, efficient double-poling, and advanced downhill techniques. All people attending this clinic will need a valid Royal Gorge season pass or a day pass.
Private Lessons: Private lessons will be taught by members of our ski school and can be tailored to the wishes and needs of the customer (skate/stride and beginner/intermediate/advanced/expert). Private lessons are a great opportunity for avid skiers to fine tune their technique by getting personal attention from qualified instructors or for new skiers to get individual attention.
Private lessons can meet at 8:45 am or anytime between 12:00 pm and 3 pm. Private lessons are not available during the scheduled clinic time slot. All private lessons in the afternoon must be consecutive. All reservations for private lessons need to be made through Royal Gorge (530) 426-3871 ext. 100. Private lessons must be scheduled no later than the day before.
When: Saturday Jan. 16th 10-12

Skate technique and efficiency clinic for intermediate to advanced skiers. We will begin at Sugar Bowl, where we will start with a series of drills that will target all of the critical basic aspects of skate skiing: body position, balance, kick, glide, etc. We will focus on learning what we need to do to keep our energy to a minimum while maximizing our efficiency. Once we have established the "basics" of the skate technique, we will head out on a ski, to where we will then focus on adjusting out techniques to what is appropriate for the terrain. While doing this, we will stop and focus specifically on each of the three sub-techniques of skating: v1, v2 and v2 alternate. We will also focus on transitions among these techniques, and how to read the terrain to understand where our transitions should take place.
Kara LaPoint has been cross country skiing since she was in the sixth grade. After winning multiple medals for earning top-ten finishes at the U.S. Junior Olympics, she earned a spot on the University of Denver ski team. Her team won a national championship in 2004-2005, in her first year at the school. She went on to compete at the NCAA championships as a junior in 2006-2007, where she finished 17th place in the 15 km classic and her team finished second place overall. After her junior year, she transferred back to the Tahoe area to attend school at the University of Nevada, Reno. There she finished up her collegiate skiing career, finished 3rd place in the Gold Rush at Royal Gorge and 4th place in the Great Ski Race. Since finishing her collegiate career, she has added in running and triathlon to her competitive schedule, but has remained dedicated to ski racing in the winter, and continues to train specifically for the sport year-round. This year she is competing with the Far West Senior Team. She turned in her first victory of the season just last weekend at Paco's Fun Race at Auburn Ski Club, where she won the 10-km distance by nearly 50 seconds.
