The Most Snow in Tahoe Averaging 500” of snow every season, the most in all of Tahoe, that means more powder days, a better skiing surface, and a deeper snowpack for better early, mid and late-season skiing. And our elevation atop Donner Summit ensures ample XC grooming throughout the season.
The Closest Major Resort to Sacramento and the Bay Area At Sugar Bowl/Royal Gorge, skiers & riders enjoy vast & varied terrain across 4 alpine peaks blanketed with the most snow in all of Tahoe, with virtually non-existent lift lines and uncrowded slopes. Serene cross country trails meander across 200km and 6,000 acres, the largest XC resort in North America. While other Tahoe skiers & riders are dealing with the frenzied “powder panic” so prevalent at other resorts, Sugar Bowl/Royal Gorge skiers enjoy more of what they came to the mountains for in the first place – skiing & riding.
Resort Improvements The planned Crow’s Peak Chairlift, scheduled to open for the 2013/14 season, will greatly enhance and improve skiing & riding on the west end of the resort, adding fall-line skiing to the Strawberry Fields and Crow’s Peak area.
Backcountry Access with Professionally-guided Powder Tours Sugar Bowl enjoys an open-boundary policy with the United States Forest Service, allowing skiers and riders to leave the resort through strategically placed backcountry gates, accessing the endless acres of powder beyond the ropes. AMGA and IFMGA-certified guides from Alpine Skills International operate the Backcountry Adventure Center, providing educational seminars on the safety of snow and guided powder tours into some of the finest backcountry terrain in all Tahoe.
Direct Trail Access to North America’s Largest Cross Country Resort Whether your pursuits are downhill skiing & riding or cross country skating and striding, Sugar Bowl/Royal Gorge offers unrivaled access to both. High-speed lifts serving 1,600 acres of exhilarating downhill terrain are located right next to groomed cross country trails connecting America’s only snowbound Village with America’s largest cross country resort, offering 200km of groomed trails across 6,000 acres of pristine terrain.
An Unwavering Dedication to the Experience Hundreds of free slopeside parking spots just steps from the lifts, a “snowball’s throw” from a dedicated slopeside children’s learning center that kids love and parents appreciate. Award-winning, nationally recognized guest service you simply won’t find at other Tahoe resorts, complete with a “hassle-free guarantee” that pays you back if you’re not 100% satisfied with your visit. A progressive points-based loyalty & rewards program that actually pays you to ski & ride. These are just a few of the many elements that comprise the exceptional Sugar Bowl/Royal Gorge experience.
We Are What We’re Not Up here, the focus on authentic alpine adventure is not blurred by base-area shopping malls. The serenity of the setting is not spoiled by high-energy late-night discos. And the ability to enjoy your activities is never interrupted by the masses, because there’s certainly no powder panic up here. Just a laid-back yet adventure-fueled group of passionate skiers happy to call this place their home resort. Because in the end, authentic alpine adventure is about being true to who you are, and perhaps more importantly, not trying to be who you’re not.
A Commitment to Corduroy With an impressive fleet of state-of-the-art grooming machines deployed every night of the season, Sugar Bowl is committed to grooming 100% of our groomable terrain during peak season, weekends and holidays. And with three grooming machines dedicated specifically to Royal Gorge, more of the 200km of cross country trails are groomed to perfection, each and every day.
America’s Only Snowbound Village Enjoy a scenic gondola ride across a high-alpine meadow to America’s only snowbound Village, offering a safe, car-free environment for kids to roam and parents to relax. This charming trailside Village serves up a truly authentic atmosphere, preserving the increasingly rare classic ski experience throughout. With convenient trailside access all day, once the lifts close for the day the Village offers a quaint, idyllic winter setting.
A World-Class Ski Team, and Home to the Western Region’s only Ski Academy Sugar Bowl/Royal Gorge boasts a long history and rich tradition of ski racing, and both the Sugar Bowl Ski Team and the Sugar Bowl Academy not only keep these traditions alive, but ensure that they flourish. With the Ski Academy boasting the only ski-in/ski-out campus in the nation, and the Ski Team providing racing, big mountain and backcountry training to 400 young skiers, both teams are focused and dedicated on developing the whole child, in mind, body, spirit and community. And Sugar Bowl’s ski ambassador Daron Rahlves, the most decorated downhiller in U.S. history, lends support and instruction to both teams.
California Owned & Operated Since 1939 Sugar Bowl/Royal Gorge boasts a rich history, steeped in tradition yet modern in amenities, with 73 years of continuous resort operations. And from experience comes excellence. In this day and age of village-centered corporate ski resorts with headquarters based outside of California, Sugar Bowl/Royal Gorge is proud of our California-based ownership group, dedicated to preserving the authentic alpine adventure and the classic California ski experience.
The Greenest Resort in Tahoe Sugar Bowl/Royal Gorge practices environment-friendly policies across the entire resort, and the Ski Area Citizen’s Coalition recognized our efforts this year with the highest environmental grade of any Tahoe resort.
