SUGAR BOWL HIRES FORMER INTRAWEST, VAIL RECREATION DIRECTOR TO LEAD SALES AND MARKETING EFFORTS

(Donner Summit, CA) – Sugar Bowl Ski Corporation has selected John Monson to be the resort’s new Director of Marketing and Sales. Monson, 37, will be responsible for leading all promotional initiatives for the historic Tahoe resort.

“We are thrilled to have someone with John’s experience and skill set joining our team”, said Sugar Bowl General Manager Rob Kautz. “We’re confident that his efforts will not only deliver local and regional results, but have a far-reaching presence into the industry overall”. Monson, a seasoned ski industry veteran, comes to Sugar Bowl from Vail, Colorado.

“I’m not too sure I could ask for a better ski resort sales and marketing opportunity”, said Monson of his new role at Sugar Bowl. “The product is fantastic, the team is progressive and the skiing community recognizes Sugar Bowl as a unique, quality experience. While I look forward to being part of Sugar Bowl’s successful future, I’m at the same time humbled to be a part of such a rich and storied history in Tahoe skiing”.

A graduate of the University of Colorado at Boulder, Monson relocated from Boulder to North Lake Tahoe in 1994 “to ski the legendary steeps of the Sierras”. Soon after, Monson returned to Colorado to launch his ski industry sales and marketing career with United Airlines Vacations, promoting air service and vacation packages to the 25 ski resorts United Airlines services, including numerous Tahoe-area destinations. In 1999, Monson was recruited by Copper Mountain in Summit County, Colorado to revamp and lead their Worldwide Tour & Travel department, managing the resort’s wholesale lodging and lift vacation package logistics. Monson was then promoted to director of leisure industry sales by Copper Mountain’s Vancouver-based parent company, Intrawest Destination Resorts, working to centralize and grow overall numbers at numerous resort destinations including Whistler Blackomb, Panorama and Tremblant in Canada, Copper Mountain and Winter Park in Colorado, The Village at Squaw in Tahoe, and Intrawest’s smaller resorts such as Mountain Creek in New Jersey, Stratton Mountain in Vermont, and Snowshoe in West Virginia. After earning his MBA in Integrated Marketing Communications, Monson then joined the Vail Recreation District in Vail, Colorado serving as both marketing and assistant executive director. Monson relocated to Truckee in May with his wife Bridget Davis, who was promoted from director of sales at the Ritz Carlton Hotel, Bachelor Gulch in Beaver Creek, Colorado, to director of sales and marketing for the new Ritz Carlton Highlands, Lake Tahoe.
