AIARE Introduction To Avalanches 1 Lift

AIARE Level 1 LIFT covers the same curriculum as our traditional Level 1. By using the ski lifts, we have quicker access to the higher alpine zone, viewing a variety of avalanche terrain. It's for skiers and snowboarders with lots of lift-served experience wanting to take a new look at better understanding the avalanche phenomena along with sidecountry travel techniques.
Please familiarize yourself with the following resources as they will help prepare you for the topics discussed in the course.
An AIARE Level 1 Certificate will be awarded upon completion.

- Companion Rescue and Equipment
Classroom vs. Field time:
Day 1: 50% Classroom, 50% Field time, Travel Techniques,Observations, Terrain Identification,Companion Rescue
Day 2: 50% Classroom, 50% Field time, Instability Tests
Day 3: 20% Classroom, 80% Field time, The Perfect Tour,Decision Making
Schedule may vary due to conditions.
Classroom Location: Backcountry Adventure Center at Sugar Bowl
Field Time Location: Mt. Lincoln/Mt. Judah, Sugar Bowl
Prerequisites:
Ability to ski or ride advanced (Black Diamond) terrain. Skiers can use regular alpine skis with touring adapters and skins, or better, alpine touring skis or telemark skis with skins (rentals available). Snowboarders can use their standard snowboard with snowshoes or a splitboard with climbing skins (rentals available).
No previous backcountry travel is required for this course.
